Evaluation of Two Web-sites

Web-site 1

Name: London Transport

URL: http://www.londontransport.co.uk/

Speed of connection

The speed of the connection was very fast and the site was loaded within 30 seconds, which I was surprised with. Once the page had loaded I was even more surprised as it contain images and colours.

First Impression

My initial impressions where that it was designed well. The first page was very informative but yet not cluttered, in a manor that could be very irritating to the user. It has a good layout and incorporates the use of tables to display the information. The text displayed is organised in a good fashion, using headings in colours to highlight them. A brief description of what the heading/link goes to is provided under each section. The background is white which is a usual site when browsing the web, as it provides a good contrast for most colours. The colours used are bright, but have been used at a minimal so not to irritate the user.

Structure

The structure of the site is good. It has frames down the left-hand side of the page which continuously sits on top of the page. This allows the user to link to other specific areas and view the site-map as well as assesses the help facility, which helps when you get stuck. The site map as been organised in three columns, under the headings of Travel Information, Visiting London and Company Information, theses are the general heading with a list of links under each heading. I felt that this page (home page) was clear and defined in what it represented and has got a good structure.

Navigation

When the designers built this web page they took into account that it could be difficult to navigate through, so for that reason they have incorporated a frames down the left hand side of the page which help you to navigate throughout the site and assess different pages. The site map is also a good feature used, this basically gives a over view of the whole site and allows he user to keep track of what pages they have visited, as the link changes colour once you have visited it once. Over all I considered the navigation to be quite easy, it was easy to identify where specific information was.

Use of animation and Graphics

Throughout the web-site there is minimal use of graphics and no use of animation what so ever. I felt that this was a down side to the site, as animation and graphics could help keep the user interested and would provide a good means of breaking the page up. They would also make the pages more exciting and not seem full of text.

Content

The content of the site is factual and concise it is represented in an orderly fashion, which make it easier to read and extract in formation from. It is very informative and includes feature such as route planner, where by you enter you destination and the route finder displays the route you could take and the bus number that takes you there

A search has also been used so that you can to a search for specific topic with in the site.

Overall view

Overall I thought that this as a good site, the information was clear and concise, and it had features built in that helped with the search and navigate through of site. Generally I thought that this site was developed with full emphasis on the use, which is good because there is no point in having a site which the user can not use. The only aspect I thought they could have improved on was, with the use of animation. Animation or more graphics could have been used to make the site more interesting to the eye and keep the user interested, but too much graphics and animation would have increased the down load time.

Web-site: 2

Name: London Jubilee line strike ends

URL: http://www.socialequality.com/workers/1998/nov1998/lon-n28.shtml

Speed of connection

The connection speed again was very fast probably faster than the first site analysed. This was probably due to the lack of colours and graphics used.

First Impression

The first impression I got when entering this site, is that it is a government site so it will be boring and restricted with the amount of features that it has incorporated. The page was very conventional and full of text, with no use of graphics or animation. The colours used where very standard, white background and black writing, with a list of links on the left on top of a blue background. I feel more thought could have been put into theses aspects.

Structure

The structure of the site is very basic it is at level one, the information is displayed as a long essay there are no breaks which help to break the text up. It does not adopt the method of frames, but does have a listing down the left had side which lets you select a particular languages which you may wish to view the site in. Along with this there is a list of links to other aspects, theses aspects have no connection with the information provided on the page, which makes it meaning less.

Navigation

There is on real point in having a navigation system for this page because the way in which it has been designed is to flow all the way down in the form of an essay, so that no other page has to be assessed or links click on. If the site were split up into a number of pages then the use of the navigation system would have been justified, but as it stands now there is on reason for one.

Use of animation and Graphics

Throughout this site there are no graphics at all, this is probably because it is a government site and the government do not like to seem childish by playing around with graphics and animation. I would have preferred to see some use of graphics or animation as it would have made the site look a whole more appealing and maybe have intised more people to visit it. At the moment it looks very dull and boring.

Content

As stated above there is no real method of organising the content it has been created in an essay format. Which makes it very boring read. There are no sub headings to help you identify what topics the page is talking about. Most people would be discouraged to read that page as it means reading through the whole document.

Overall View

Overall I thought that the site had much to be improved, the way in which it was structured, the content and the visual aspects all had to be improved. When this site was designed I felt that the designers did not take into consideration the user views and the way in which they would have liked it to be displayed. I feel that this is a poor representation of a web-site and this is the way a web site should not be design.
