InfoCity 2000 is a company that designs web sites with information for the future.
This proposal includes the design for a web site concerning transport.
The web site will include general information about transport, the future of transport, developments and trends with in transport.
We will filter the information and present it to the user. Our main objective is to create a unique web site that is easy to use and concise, eliminating an over load of information.Project Statement
The popularity of global information networks used, as an information resource in all areas is that business, industrial, educational and leisure, has grown. We are now aiming at being a society that runs on information. Many changes are occurring and perhaps the most important one of all is the turn of the century.
Information is the most sought after resource. The craze for information is just beginning and will grow in the future. People want to know things i.e., what is happening? Why it is happening? We are now moving fully in to the information era, and must recognise that changes are required, and information must be marketed so that it reaches it's full potential.
The Global Information Network is one of the most recognised sources of information that is not only growing in popularity but also recognition. Global information networks also know as the World Wide Web (WWW) has the reputation of an up-todate, easy to use and accessible information resource. The attraction to the WWW is that it is viewed as the future library, but unlike an average library there are more facilities available through the WWW.
If we take in the all the factors from above, the turn of the century bringing changes to our lives and the way we think. Information changing society and having a global effect on everyone and finally the Internet bringing information and people together. To inform people of changes or just to market your information, the Internet is the perfect resource and now is the time to use the information, as the requirement is considerable and can make a difference.Introduction and Context
Our Client is the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR)
Following the General Election on 1 May 1997, John Prescott was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions.
On 16 June 1997 the former Departments of Environment and Transport were merged to become the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions
The main reason for the merger was to ensure greater coherence and a more integrated approach to policy on the environment, transport and regional affairs. They currently have a web site with holds all the information about the department and the matters they deal with.
The Priorities of this Department are as follows;
The problem that the client is encountering is that even though they have a well designed web site available on the internet, which holds a lot of information. Users have difficulty accessing that information on the basis that the information design is not user friendly.
This means that the information is provided but is not put together correctly nor is the right degree of information available. For example the client would like general information displayed about transport, different areas of transport and then each broken down and liked to other relevant areas that the client deal with. Currently they have information provided on a wide variety of areas (shown below) but each section displays different information that has just been put together due to basic similarities.
Our Client as we mentioned earlier already has a well-developed site holding a lot of information. A list of titles is shown below so that you may gain an understanding of what the current site involves: -
The actual site uses icon to display information. It is a bright and colourful site and to begin with is very easy to navigate around. The problem stars occurring as you begin accessing the information, it is easy to get 'bogged down' or confused with the information. To help with the navigation the links change colour once visited which help you keep track of where you have been on the site.
The presentation of the site is very nice, they have used basic multi media, and there is no animation, sound or detailed graphics.
The have used colour very well, icons and a few pictures but the overall effect is very good. What makes the site well presented is the initial homepage that does not have the standard format of other sites. The choices are provided by icons, which are in a circle. There are no other menus available and below the circle is their contact address. Like I said earlier the site is basic but well presented. Links off the home page are a lot more basic, they just provide a title of information available. This area could do with some more work. The information just leads off from each other, for example anything that refers to taxis is thrown under that section.
What they would like is break down the Transport section first. All the Highlighted titles above will be moved under this heading and broken down correctly. What they would then like to do is separate the information and filter it so that they relevant information is displayed in the right area.
They would like to expand each topic of transport, provide clear and relevant information about each and then link it to other topic that may have reference to it. For example it we take Taxi's. What the client requires is information about Taxis, their current and future status. Project and policies that concerns them. They would then like integrated transport discussed and how it will effect taxis, further links will be made to the environment, fuel and safety which are all separate issues that effect taxis. This example is given to show how the client wants to break up the system and so that the information can be in detail without being to cluttered to understand. They would also like to divide the information in to various sections so that they have the same format for each subject.
The client would also like the presentation of the home page and the links off the home page changed and improved with the use of multimedia tools. The whole idea is to have a new look for millenium, but with consideration that it is still representing a government information page.
To begin with this new design will be implemented on the Transport section, from the above list the titles that are highlighted will be used. If the client approves of the new design the whole site will be redesigned and will actually replace the current site.
Our proposal was reviewed by three of our fellow colleagues within our course. The areas that they highlighted were -:
After receiving the comments made by our colleagues, we had a group meeting. At the meeting it was decided that we need to look at our project and see if we really understand what is required. It is then that we decided that we needed to work within a scope so that we know who we are working for, what we are doing and the boundaries of the project. Our initial project had been to design a web site that held information about developments and changes that would occur in the year 2000. The project would contain information on four specific subjects, with further plans to increase the subjects covered in the future.
Once we started working on the project and gathering information, we realised that there were no clearly defined boundaries. We also realised that we did not know whom the project was being designed for. Was it going to be a free information service? Or would we sell the web site. If we were to sell the web site once designed we needed to allow for costs and services in our project plan. The other major issue that came to light was how much information were we going to provide. Initially we had decided to research into five years of each topic starting from the millennium, it soon came apparent to us that researching in to five years of a topic was unrealistic. The reason being some of the information given hardly covered a year and many of the topics did not really display information in the manner of years but what was involved. Again we encountered another problem. How much detail we should give? If we cover all the information we very quickly get 'bogged down ' by it all, which defeats the object of our site being easy to use and concise.
So in the end we decided to re-define our project and decided that instead of being an encyclopedia about different subjects, we would design a site that concentrated on one subject in detail. This is when we thought of transport, all our group members are doing other projects in transport so we decided to present information about a subject we already knew about.
This is when we came upon the DETR web site, we thought this was a very good site but there was room for improvement. This is how we came up with our new proposal. The peer assessment was a very good idea because they highlighted points that we as group were unaware of and also made us raise questions of our own.
The consortium has agreed that we will be delivering this information on the Internet through a structured web site. This will be a relatively large site, therefore we will also deliver details of what is currently available on-line and direct people to relevant sites of interest.
We are selecting the Internet as the medium on which we are producing this product. The consortium has agreed that this method will help the user with: -
We aim to produce a navigational system using a variety of methods so that the user will be able to manoeuvre around the site easily and quickly.
The site will attempt to use the main human sensory channels which is sight (in relation to the Internet anyway). The user will have an 'easy-to-follow' navigational tool to guide them through the array of information available. The site will be developed with concise text, images, pictures, sound and an 'image' map. This will make the interaction between the user and the screen more effective. It will keep the user enticed on what is going on as they navigate their way through the pages.
